Why do so few of us really know ourselves? We are caught in an age of self-uncertainty. We know more about others than we do about ourselves. When it comes to the superficial questions, such as your favorite color, your favorite band, your favorite poet, we are full of answers. Why can’t we answer the questions that truly matter, the questions that make us who we truly are?
Do you know what you want to be? What you want to do? Are you living a life that someone else has paved out for you; are you caught in someone else’s dream? There seems to be only a shred of your true self left, a dreary grey matter, a shell of the real you. And though it took years to watch your true self fade, it does not take years to regain it.
When we were younger we knew what we wanted to be. Whether it was a fireman, a teacher, or a veterinarian, no matter what it was we had the answer to life’s question; “What do you want to be?”. As we grew up, got married, had children, found careers we seemed to lose ourselves somehow. We grew apart from ourselves. It’s time to rediscover what it is you really want in life, who you really want to be, and what you really want to have.
The hard part is taking time out of this hectic life for yourself. You must declare time for you, set aside a special time of day, each day, as discovery time. You must stick to this, it is imperative in order to regain your sense of self. It was the neglect that let you slip away. You will need to have a notebook and a pen ready. Write at the top of the first page “What do I want to do in life before I die?”. This is, in a sense, your “Bucket List”, your “101" list. You must ponder on, think on, and write out every aspect of your perfect life. Write out what your perfect career is (even if you are already working towards it, or doing it), write out what your perfect house looks like, what the perfect daily emotional layout would be like, what the perfect relationship for you is, and what you want to be, do, and have before your last day here on earth. This is the hard part.
Be true to yourself with your answers because this is the discovery process. It’s about heeding what you already know to be true inside yourself, and writing it out so that you are consciously aware that this is it. Once you have your ‘life-layout’ ready then begin your transformation. This won’t be quick but it can be amazing. Set goals that reflect the things you wish to create. Set aside a certain amount of time each day for self discovery and allow yourself to do something you love during this daily recreation time. If the dishes get put aside for a day because of it, then be at peace with that, and go have your fun. You have to decide that your fulfillment is worth it. Foolow your heart, follow your list, and follow the dreams that you have set into place. Minute by minute, day by day, use your creativity to bring your dreams to fruition.
